We all know
no one likes getting a ticket so these stats won't upset too many.
But the point that can't be argued is, aggressive police enforcement
of motor vehicle laws do save lives and make for a safer motoring
experience.
As shown here
enforcement action peaked in 1999 with almost 30,000 summonses
issued. That has rapidly dwindled to just over 12,000 summonses
issued since Joe Santiago arrived. A direct correlation can be
attributed to him eliminating the Traffic unit.
Another reason
for fewer summonses issued is the increased workload on the beat
cop. Calls for service have increased dramatically in recent years
leaving little down time to enforce motor vehicle laws.
If a Traffic
unit were still in place, aggressive enforcement would be occurring
thus insuring the removal of bad drivers, drunk drivers, speeders,
uninsured motorists and a more concentrated effort would be occurring
on the removal of 'pocket bikes' and scooters from the streets.
